Obama Reproduces Bush’s Iran Failure

Iran diplomacy in Washington these days consists principally of coaxing the likes of Russia and China to support new sanctions – and persuading gullible journalists that Moscow and Beijing are “on board”.

On Friday, the US president Barack Obama told CBS television that Iran is trying to get the “capacity to develop nuclear weapons”, and that he and his allies “are going to ratchet up the pressure … with a unified international community”. Nobody sets much store by such talk, of course, because President George W Bush had been saying the same thing since 2006 with little effect.

Sure, Russia and China have agreed to finally discuss a Security Council resolution to increase sanctions first imposed three years ago over Iran’s failure to comply with all the transparency requirements of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). But Moscow and Beijing have also made clear that they don’t believe Iran is building nuclear weapons. Nor does the US, for that matter. The CIA’s assessment is that no such decision has yet been taken, and that Iran’s current nuclear efforts will simply give it the option to build nuclear weapons.

As a result, Russia and China have also made clear that they will block any new sanctions that inflict significant pain on the Islamic Republic, aware that the stand-off can only be resolved by dialogue, and that sanctions are unlikely to help.

Tony, I just don’t understand this nonsense of trying to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. After all, South Africa had them, Pakistan has them, India has them, China has them, Russia has then, Israel has them, etc., etc., etc.

How is it that Western powers believe that they have the right to stop any sovereign country from doing anything they want, as long as they don’t threaten their neighbors. And even when they wreak havoc with their neighbors, as Israel does, it is okay if you are a member of the club.

Doesn’t sovereign mean has total power within its borders.

As long as this nonsense goes on, there will be no real peace in the world, and steadily increasing violence will be the rule of the day.

I can’t believe that a man of so little integrity as true of Obama is so capable of proclaiming he is for viable change. That man’s ability to lie through his teeth and appear sincere is truly amazing. He makes Bill Clinton look like a rank amateur.

A big ‘thumbs up’ for the use of ‘modus vivendi’. It has such a nice melodic “ring” to it! Of course, almost anything beats Condi’s repetitive use of “casus belli ante” in regard to Lebanon during the summer of 2006.

  3. I like the article. I was able to send this to a dentist I know that could use this on their website..

“Capacity to make nuclear weapons”?? According to the IAEA there are 40 countries that already have that “capacity” since any country with any nuclear technology theoretically has the “capacity” to make bombs. This is a nonsense charge intended to make up for the fact that the US doesn’t have any actual evidence of a nuclear weapons program in Iran.

They (big countries) all play the old inefficient game called “lets hurt our competition by hurting somebody else” and they do not understand the essence of the situation. Iran is emerging as a regional power and nobody can stop that. If Iran gives up the nuclear weapon efforts, there are going to be another demand and then another. The same is happening all the time. Let just take the example with Macedonia.
